Knitting
consists of
consecutive loops of thread or yard, called
wales (columns) and courses (rows).
- Weft Knit
fabrics are characterized by the wales
running perpendicular to the course of the yarn.
- Warp Knit
fabrics have the
wales and courses running roughly parallel.
Since one yarn is required for every wale, warp
knitting is typically done by machine.
- Tricot Knit is a special case
of warp knitting in which the yarn zigzags vertically, following
a single wale of knitting,
rather than a single course, as
is customary. Tricot knits are very
resistant to runs and are commonly used in
lingerie.
